Expiry auction

An expiry auction is an auction of a domain its owner failed to renew, run by or for the registrar during the post-expiry period, before the name would otherwise be deleted and released to the public.

Expiry auction, explained

Registration agreements typically let the registrar sell an expired name before deletion, on its own platform or through an auction partner. GoDaddy's published timeline shows the pattern: the name is listed on its Expired Domains Auction 26 days after expiry, the former owner can still recover it for a fee until there is an active bid from about day 30, unsold names move to a closeout auction at about day 36 or 37, and the winner receives the existing registration. Some registries run their own: expiring .ai names may be auctioned through the registry's partnership with Namecheap.

Many of the strongest expiring names sell at this stage, so competition is real. Check trademarks, past use in the Wayback Machine and backlinks before bidding, set a maximum in advance, and expect some auctions to be cancelled when the former owner recovers the name. A name won this way keeps its original creation date, but in a UDRP dispute panels treat your acquisition date as the one that counts.

Example. The investor bid on a two-word .com in a registrar's expiry auction, but the auction was cancelled when the former owner paid to recover the name.
