The largest domain name sales of all time

The most expensive domain name ever sold, by public report, is AI.com at $70 million — bought by Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek and reported in February 2026. The broker's announcement says the price more than doubles the previous domain-only record, the $30 million paid for Voice.com in 2019.

What counts as a domain sale

The list above follows DNJournal's rule: sales of domain names only — not developed websites or companies — paid in cash, completed and transferred. That rule is why some famous figures are missing.

CarInsurance.com is often quoted at $49.7 million (2010). That was QuinStreet buying the company and website, not a domain-only sale, so it is not on the domain list (QuinStreet's own announcement describes an acquisition of CarInsurance.com, Inc.). Other lists apply slightly different rules and so differ at the margins.

The AI.com sale

AI.com was bought by Kris Marszalek, the founder of Crypto.com, for $70 million. The deal was reported in February 2026 (TechCrunch), and the broker's announcement called it the largest domain name transaction in history, more than double the earlier record of $30 million for Voice.com (GetYourDomain.com press release).

How to read a list like this

These are outliers. Every name on the list is a short .com, most of them single words — the scarcest category there is. The middle of the market looks nothing like this: the median sale on Sedo in 2025 was $818 (sources), and most domain names never sell at all.

Reported sales are also a fraction of the real market. Many of the largest deals are private and never published, so no list is complete.

For how names are actually priced, see how to value and price a domain name and the types of domain names that sell.

Largest reported sales of 2026 so far

Through August 23, 2026, DNJournal's year-to-date chart lists AI.com at $70,000,000, Club.com at $10,000,000 and Green.com at $7,500,000. The largest .ai sale of the year to that date is Bot.ai at $1,200,000 (DNJournal year-to-date chart).
