Average sale price, explained

A few large sales pull the average far above the typical deal, so read ASP next to the median. Sedo's 2025 figures, published in the Global Domain Report 2026, show the gap: the median sale price was $818, up from about $550, while the average was $2,753, more than three times higher. Half of the sales closed at or below the median.

For your own portfolio, ASP means something only alongside sell-through rate and holding costs: yearly revenue is roughly ASP times the number of names sold, and it has to cover renewals on every name, including the many that never sell. Calculate ASP net of commissions, and do not use a marketplace's ASP as a forecast for your names. It describes names that sold, not the ones that did not.

Example. Twenty sales with an average sale price in the low four figures can sit on a median in the mid three figures if one of them was large.
