Sales history, explained

The main public sources are NameBio, a database that tracks reported sales; DNJournal's regular sales reports and year-to-date charts; and marketplace data such as the annual Global Domain Report from InterNetX and Sedo. Each record shows the name, price, date and usually the venue. A name's own past, including earlier owners, can be traced through WHOIS history tools.

Reported sales are a small, skewed sample. Many private deals are never disclosed, auction results reflect wholesale prices, and the biggest sales get the most attention. Use comps in the same extension, length, word type and venue, and weigh several sales over one outlier. The common mistake is pricing a name from the single best comp you can find while ignoring the base rate: most similar names never sell at all.

Automated appraisal tools learn from the same reported sales, so they inherit the same gaps; check any figure against the records behind it.

Example. Before countering an offer on a two-word .com, an investor pulls a dozen reported sales of similar two-word .coms from recent years and sets a range from the middle of them.
