Chips (Chinese premium domains)

Chips (Chinese premium domains) are short .com names, usually four letters, made only of letters favored by Chinese buyers, which in common usage means no vowels and no letter V.

Chips, explained

The pattern comes from Chinese investor and end-user demand. Short letter strings are often read as abbreviations of pinyin, the romanized spelling of Mandarin; pinyin does not use the letter V, and relatively few syllables begin with a vowel, so consonant-only strings map more easily onto Chinese words and phrases. Numeric names follow their own preferences, with 8 widely favored and 4 often avoided.

Chips trade like a commodity. Because the category is defined by a rule, investors quote floor prices and trade among themselves, which makes chips liquid when Chinese demand is strong and slow to sell when it fades; prices have swung sharply with sentiment. Buy near the current wholesale floor, check recent auction results rather than old price charts, and do not price a random chip as if an end user were waiting for it.

Example. An investor buys four-consonant .com chips at the prevailing wholesale floor, planning to resell them to other investors rather than to end users.
