GlossaryName types

Short domain

A short domain is a domain name with very few characters, usually five or fewer before the extension, valued for scarcity, memorability and ease of typing, and often traded by pattern, such as LL, LLL or NNN.

Short domain, explained

Scarcity is arithmetic: any extension has only 676 two-letter and 17,576 three-letter combinations, and in .com these sets are effectively all registered. Investors group short names by pattern, writing letters as L, numbers as N and consonant-vowel shapes as CVCV, because names within a pattern trade at comparable prices. In many newer extensions the registry reserves short names as premiums, priced above the standard fee and sometimes renewing at premium rates.

Short is not automatically valuable. A clean three-letter .com or a pronounceable five-letter name can sell quickly, but a random five-character mix of letters and numbers has few buyers. Check the renewal price before buying a short name in a newer extension, and price against recent sales of the same pattern and extension rather than the top sale in the category.

Example. An investor compares a four-letter .com with a pronounceable five-letter .com and finds the first easier to sell to other investors and the second more appealing to a startup.
