Direct navigation

Direct navigation is traffic that reaches a website because people type its domain name straight into the browser's address bar, often guessing a generic name such as a product category in .com, rather than clicking a search result or link.

Direct navigation, explained

Type-in traffic made generic .coms valuable in the parking era, because visitors arrived without any advertising spend. It has shrunk as browsers merged the address bar with search, so a typed word often becomes a search query, and as people moved to apps, bookmarks and now AI assistants. Measure it with server logs or parking statistics, and filter out bots, which can make up a large share of raw hits.

For a domain investor, real type-in traffic is evidence that a name matches how people think about a category, which supports its value to an end user. Do not pay for traffic history alone: check whether visits are recent, human and from the countries a buyer cares about, and whether they come from misspellings of a brand, which is typosquatting traffic and a legal risk, not an asset. Value the name first and treat traffic as a supporting fact.

Example. Visitors who type a plain product word followed by .com into the address bar and land on that site are direct navigation traffic.
