Dictionary-word domain, explained

Value depends on how common and commercial the word is, not on the fact that it appears in a dictionary. A word used daily in a large industry attracts many end users; an obscure or archaic word attracts few, however short. At the top of the market, single words set records: Voice.com was reported sold for $30 million in 2019.

Check whether the word is also a strong brand somewhere. WIPO panels note that dictionary words can work as trademarks when used for unrelated goods, with Orange in telecoms as their example, so a dictionary name used to target that brand, for instance through parked ads about it, can still lose a dispute. Use tied to the word's ordinary meaning is the safe side.

The common mistake is assuming any dictionary word is valuable: rare words, and common words in weak extensions, rarely command the prices of common words in .com.

Example. A one-word .com for a common household item draws inquiries from many retailers, while an obscure word of the same length draws almost none.
