Domain name generator, explained
Older generators work from word lists and rules; many newer ones use large language models to propose brandable or descriptive names, covered separately under AI domain name generators. Registrar search boxes act as generators too, and they can show aftermarket names for sale next to unregistered ones: listings in Afternic's network, for example, appear across its reseller network, including GoDaddy.
Generators and registrar searches are where many end users begin, which is why it matters to list names where those searches display them. As a buying tool, a generator needs discipline: a name it finds is unregistered because others passed on it, so run the radio test, search trademarks and check comparable sales before registering, and never register generator output in bulk hoping volume will produce sales.
Example. A founder enters three keywords into a domain name generator and gets a list of unregistered two-word .com names alongside a few premium names listed for sale.
