Hand registration, explained
A hand reg costs only the registration fee, which makes it the cheapest way to add names, but whatever is still available is what everyone else passed over. The openings come from timing: new words and trends before others notice them, the general availability day of a new extension, and phrases whose meaning has just changed. Some available names carry a registry premium price, so check the renewal price as well as the first-year price.
The common mistake is volume. Each name renews every year, and a large set of hand regs with a low sell-through rate loses money year after year. Check trademarks before registering: UDRP panels expect investors who register in bulk or by automation to screen names against readily available trademark databases. AI generators make candidate names nearly free to produce, so the filter you apply matters more than the list you start with.
Example. A hand reg of a two-word .com costs only the standard registration fee, but it still needs a buyer, and a renewal budget for every year you hold it.
