Emoji domain, explained

Emoji are not permitted under IDNA2008, the standard that governs internationalized domain names, so gTLDs such as .com do not accept them. In its 2017 advisory SAC095, ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee recommended rejecting any top-level domain containing emoji and strongly discouraged registering any domain name that includes them, naming .ws and .la as country codes that allowed emoji at the second level. Each emoji name maps to an xn-- string, and devices draw the same emoji differently.

For investors, emoji domains are a novelty with a thin market. Some browsers and apps show the raw xn-- form instead of the emoji, the names are hard to type and easy to confuse, and reported sales are too few to price from. If you buy one, treat it as an experiment rather than an asset with a predictable resale value.

Example. A marketer registers a heart-emoji .ws name as a campaign link, knowing some apps will display it as an xn-- string.
