Trend domain, explained
Trend names follow a familiar curve. When a term takes off, investors hand-register thousands of combinations, a few category-defining names sell for large sums, and the rest depend on whether the term becomes everyday vocabulary. NFTs.com sold for $15,000,000 in 2022, according to DNJournal, near the height of that cycle; the long tail of combinations registered around it is where most of the risk sat.
AI is the current trend, and the same rules apply. The big sales are short and generic: AI.com, whose $70 million sale was reported in February 2026, and Bot.ai, at $1,200,000 the largest .ai sale of 2026 through August 23. Long combinations of AI plus a keyword rarely sell. Before registering, ask whether businesses will still use the term in five years, register a few names rather than many, and set a review date: trend portfolios usually fail through renewals, not one bad purchase.
Example. Registering dozens of names that pair metaverse with property or fashion words at the height of that hype was buying trend domains.
