Wholesale price

Wholesale price is what a domain would sell for to another domain investor, who needs room to resell at a profit, as opposed to the retail price an end user pays for a name to use; it is usually far below retail.

Wholesale price, explained

Wholesale prices appear in investor-to-investor deals, expiry auctions, closeouts and portfolio sales, where buyers price in risk, holding time and their own sell-through rate. Retail prices appear when an end user buys a name for a business. Check who bought each comparable and through which venue before relying on it.

The gap between the two is the business model and the risk: you buy near wholesale, hold for years and hope to sell at retail, while most names never sell. Know each name's wholesale value even if you never plan to accept it, because it is your realistic exit when you need cash and a sound benchmark for renew-or-drop decisions. The common mistakes are paying retail for a name you plan to resell, which leaves no margin, and refusing every wholesale offer on a name that has drawn no retail interest in years.

Example. An investor turns down a low four-figure offer from another investor on a two-word .com but records it as the name's wholesale benchmark for future renewal decisions.
