Front-running

Front-running is the practice of using data about domain availability searches to register a name shortly after someone looks it up, so the name can be resold to that person or monetized.

Front-running, explained

ICANN's Security and Stability Advisory Committee described it in an October 2007 advisory, likening it to front running in stock markets, while noting it had no hard data on how often it happened. The incentive was strongest when the five-day add grace period let registrars delete new names for a refund, which made holding a searched name nearly free; ICANN's 2008 Add Grace Period Limits Policy sharply limited those refunds and with them much of the economics.

For a domain investor, the practical rules are simple. Check availability at a reputable registrar or through registry RDAP data, and register a good find immediately rather than coming back later. Avoid unknown availability checkers, browser extensions and AI chat tools that look up names for you, since each is a third party that sees your list. When a name you searched is suddenly taken, coincidence is the likeliest explanation: other investors and their tools find the same names.

Example. A name that shows as available on a little-known lookup site and is registered by someone else within the hour may be a case of front-running.
